Think Spot 17 June (Sharon)

This week, we have another day off. It's to celebrate Matariki and it's only been a public holiday since 2022.

Matariki is a cluster of stars visible to us this time of the year, close to the shortest day which is this Saturday, 21 June

It is a cluster visible before dawn where it is 5degrees above the horizon and the sun is 16degrees below. Any closer and the sun makes it invisible. Matariki is the Maori name, in Greek it means 7 sisters and in Japan it's called Subaru and the car manufacturers have this as their logo.

In Hebrew, this cluster is called Pleadies and is mentioned in the oldest book ever written, the book of Job in the Bible, chapter 38:31, telling us how amazing creation is! The book demonstrates God's superior wisdom in creating and sustaining the world.

I have been learning Psalm 19. It describes how 'the heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the works of His hands, day after day they pour forth speech and night after night they reveal knowledge'.

It's been doing that for thousands of years - this week, let's marvel at that!
